the water-price of Korea

Many of you traveled Europe for ten days last week. We've found many differences between Europe and Korea. One is the outlook of city, which Yeonhong said before, and another one is the price of  each commodity. Especially, many students had trouble buying expensive water. I guess you might have felt that the water price of Korea is extremely lower than other countries.

Look at this graph. The water fee of one French family is 6 times higher than that of Korean family who use same amount of water. Not only a bottle of water that is selled in supermarket, but also general water fee of Europe is much more expensive than Korea's one.
(the very left one is Korea's one and the very right one is France's one)

Considering Korea is one of the most wasteful water-consumer countries around the world, raising water price seems needed. People often forget the importance of water because of the cheap price, and they tend to waste it. The present water price is even lower than the production cost.

However, whenever the water price becomes controversial, raising water fee faces the oppositions saying "it will be critical to many ordinary families in Korea.". They have a point because we need to spend water all the time, and thus it is the most significant commodity. Raising water price can influence the whole economy as well.

Than, what do you think about this topic? Do you think Korea government should raise the price of water much higher than before, or not?

  1. Nice post. Nicely organized and good writing. This was a good topic that branched out to many other topics related with water. Can water ever be "too cheap"? It should be free in my opinion.
