The future society Essay #2

Since ancient times, people, especially who are recognized as a celebrity, have made assumptions about the future world. It is very challenging and risky to guess the future. Some people underestimated the speed of change, and others emphasized only on the bright side. The possibility of exact estimate is extremely low, and many historians might not guess objectively, influenced by the social atmosphere. Despite these difficulties, analyzing the present world and guess the future would be helpful in many ways. The world will face three big changes; political change, technological change, and trading.

Democracy will spread and be revised in 21st century. Recently, people in several Middle East countries have struggled against autocracy. Starting with Tunisia, dictators in Egypt and Libya have been removed, and the rebellion is still in process in countries like Syria. As the world economy became unstable, the corruption of the autocratic governments got revealed. Also brutal way of suppressing protesters was shared in social network, gathering many protesters. The rapid change toward democracy in some Middle East countries will affect to other autocratic countries in Asia and Africa. Before long, Democracy will once again widely spread in a short period. Furthermore, the democracy will be significantly changed as time passes by. Original democratic countries such as United States and European Union have had a hard time solving inequality, unfairness, corruption, and many other social problems. Many philosophers will ponder a question ‘Is present democracy can really be justified?’, and they’ll revise democracy in many ways. The form and policies of government will be significantly reformed, as the philosophy they based on changes.

New energy sources will eventually substitute petroleum. The whole world is facing difficulty of energy production, as the amount of petroleum decreases and the price of it rapidly rises. Also, as global warming gets serious, people started to seek energy source that doesn’t harm environment. A number of people are looking for new energy sources, obtaining a large number of good results. Diverse technologies are widely applied, but still it needs more improvement. For example, nuclear energy has been developed for 40 years, but it’s not enough to completely alternate petroleum. However, as more people step into alternative energy field and investment increases, the energy revolution will soon arrive. In the energy revolution period, huge petroleum companies will quickly lose their influence and authority. They would not want to lose their power, so they’ll try to delay these revolutions. However, since global warming becomes hot issue and the petroleum becomes scarce, the era of petroleum will make its end.

People will judge value of a product not only by rational reason, but also by sentimental reason. People now judge product by price and quality. For example, people buy desks for comfortableness, design, price, and trademark. In the future, people will consider ‘story’ of the desk. There are many music TV programs such as ‘Super Star K’ and ‘I’m the Singer’. The viewers of the program not only judge music by music itself, but also the tense storyline of the competition. Although a song was not as good as they expected and was old-fashioned, the song tops the chart because the programs also broadcast how much singers made effort and how difficult their situations were. Likewise, in the 21st century, people will not only evaluate songs, dramas, and movies by sentimental reason, but also evaluate material products by sentimental reasons. Companies will make story and dream in their product, and consumer and seller will trade these ‘story’.

These three expectations are not certain. As society changes diversely, the future will be changed in many directions. Although, it is hard to make a correct assumption of the future, it will help show abundant potentiality of the future. People can get brilliant ideas by many assumptions, and they really change the world as they expected. Without numerous expectations of the future, the rapid social changes won’t continue. These three assumptions are the most plausible, which many people have discussed and agreed. Politics, technologies, and the way people think will definitely be different from the present. Revised democracy, renewable energy sources, and dream society will be the most important characteristic of the future.

Random post #2-3 trip to 해남(Haenam)- on the last day

We woke up on 6 a.m. to watch famous sunrise. It was very kind of 민박집 아주머니 that she knocked the door several times to wake us up. We went to beach to see sunrise, but there were so many clouds that we failed to see sunrise. Some people even said it's impossible to watch sunrise at once.

We leaved the 민박, after sleeping for an hour. Thanks to 민박집 아주머니, we could enjoy 해남 successfully. We came back to Gwanju U-squrare station and watched the movie, Skyfall 007.

It was my first time to watch 007 movie. I've heard James Bond, but I had no idea who he was. Skyfall was exciting although the storyline was a bit banal. At the beginning of the movie, I thought I would be a man like him, but at the end, I no longer thought like that. Anyway Skyfall was great movie.

We spent as much as 4 hours in a bus and at last, arrived at Wonju terminal. We bought hamburgers for dinner and took ban to come back to school.

The travel was very exciting. Everything was going smoothly, and we could enjoy as much as possible. The next trip of 'Looking for a periphery' will be fantastic as well.

Random post #2-2 trip to 해남(Haenam)- on the second day

Wow, it was already 9:30, when we woke up. We should have gotten up much earlier to watch movie. On the bus to Haenam, w=e had a bread as a breakfast that Seok-hwa bought. All of us took a sleep again in the bus. After we arrived, some of us investigated the house in 땅끝마을 we would stay all night, and the others looked for restarurant for lunch. We had a 떡볶이, 순대, 오뎅, and 튀김 for lunch. Only a few minutes after lunch, we took a bus to go 두륜산 and 대흥 temple

Haenam was calm town. In a few minutes, wide farm appears and continues for more than an hour. Rice was peacefully ripening yellow. We arrived at 두륜산, which is famous for the longest cable car in Korea. We checked our bag to one market and went to take a cable car. Jinho is our 'teacher', who leads 'Fabian religion'. Seonghyun invented joke for Jinho, and whenever Seonghyun teased Jinho, a racing started. We laughed every frequently thanks to Seonghyun, Changsun, and Jinho. Our majesty is always great.

We should pay quite a lot to take the cable car. It was as much as eight thousand one for each, but we payed without much concern. The scenery was marvelous. As cable car climbs higher, the scenery became more magnificient. When we reached the top of the mountain, after getting off, it became so wonderful that everybody admires the landscape. When we look up south and west, there are ocean and islands like a tapestry, and north and east, we could see villages surrounded by numerous mountains. We took a picture and enjoy the scnery for more than thirty minutes. Luckly, when we tried to descend from a mountain, the cable car arrives in a five minutes. We gave up to go 대흥사, and get on the bus to 땅끝마을.

When we arrived at 땅끝마을,  it was slowly becoming darker. We hurried to unpack our baggage in 민박 that we made a reservation, and went to take a monorail. Very Luckly, we barely took the last monorail. There were many people even though it was a weekday. Sun was slowly going down. Evening glow became redden and more beautiful. We took a picture for many times, in many poses. Cloud was not covering sun although there were quite many clouds. Sun dissapers quite quicker than my expectation. We descended a mountain, taking a monorail.

We had a dinner in sushi restarurant that 민박집 아주머니 recommended. Sushi was very expensive, but it was worth paying. Before main dish, lots of side dishes, variety of small sushi, were served. Nothing wasn't delicious. Main dish was wonderful. The taste and texture was by far the best. The taste of 매운탕, the last dish, overwhelms all other 매운탕 I've eaten. It was like an cultural shock!

Then, we went to 해남 땅끝 노래방. At first, the facilility was uncomfortable, but it became better as time passed by. We sang many songs cheerfully, and Chang sun sometimes danced with joy. It's frenzily exciting.

We came back to 민박, and most people wrote 'Earthlings' writing. However, after a while, some finished writing, and others gave up writing, so people started to play game and cook a meat at midnight. We got some rice from the sushi restarurant, so we had meat with rice and gimchi. Byeng yoon and Senghyun cooked meat, and our teacher, Jinho cooked rice. All of them were great cook. Thanks to them, we ate satisfactorily.

After cleaning up, we watched the 'Gag Concert', the popular Korean gag program. All of us slept in half an hour.

Random Post #2 Trip to 해남(Haenam) -- on the first day

Before Mid-term test, Genhyung, Changsun, Byungyoon, Seunghyun, Jin ho(the Great Fabian), Young Oh, Seok Hwa, and I planned to go Haenam for our first trip. Our club, Looking for the Periphery, has two more memebers, but they couldn't join due to personal problems. We made all plans in our Facebook club, and decided to go trip right after mid-term test.

Haenam is so called 땅끝마을, becase it locates the lowest part of the peninsula. It is well-known for beautiful sunset and sunrise, and ocean scenery. It is also famous for loacation that 1박 2일 and numerous documentaries were filmed. Every month, there are many festivals such as celebrating general 이순신 and the great scholar 정약용. This is very meaningful for us to visit Haenam, because general 이순신 and 정약용 are our school models.

On the last day of mid-term test, we start our trip. We went to Seoul first, because we were going to take a KTX. Genhyung and Changsun, leaders of the club, already bought a train tickets at an appropriate time. Since we had two more hours to take a train, we looked around Seoul Coex and had a dinner. We dropped by famous Doll store to buy some souvenir. I bought Totoro doll for my sister. Then, after we had a dinner in Pizza Hut, we took a train at Seoul station.

After taking train for 4 hours, we arrived at Gwang-Ju station around ten thirty. We took a commemoration picture since Gwang-Ju is one of the most important city in Korean modern history. We went to the JimJilbang, that chang-sun investigated, but JimJilbang didn't allow us to stay night there because there was no adult in our club. There were many motels around Gwang-Ju station, but most of them seem risky. So, we searched internet to look for appropriate motel or JimJilbang, and finally it was determined to go U-square JimJilbang.

U-squre, which includes U-square JimJilbang inside, was a quite big and sophisticated building, including many facilities. We went into Sauna and enjoyed splash fight. It was very exciting because there are no one else in the Sauna. Then, we looked around the U-square building. There were CGV, many restaurants, and bus terminal. We were very lucky because we should go Haenam by bus. We planned to watch a movie early morning next day. After we came back, we had a chat for hours about our school and students. We went to bed at 2 a.m.

Earthlings academic review

The movie ‘Earthlings’ quite successfully contends the cruelty of animal abuse. It contains abundant horrible videos taken by dozens of hidden cameras, such as cannibalism, ocean covered with blood, elementary students who is passing slaughterhouse by, monkeys of which head twisted by 60 degrees several times, and etc. These alarm a number of facts about human beings such as inhumanity, indifference, and cruelty. Lots of students, especially girls, cannot have a meat for several hours after watching movies. Many of them feel disgusting by just looking meals, and some of them even vomit during watching the movie. It means the movie ‘Earthlings’ somewhat succeeds to make people emotionally react. Some elements of this movie contribute significantly to change people’s thought, but still it isn’t perfect.

The systematical flow of the movie is effective to show diverse methods of mistreat. The movie is comprised of five chapters: Pet, Food, Cloth, Entertainment, and Science. Each chapter has totally different settings, with distinct plots at all. For example, in the fifth chapter ‘Science’, monkey is taking a space shuttle, while in the second chapter ‘Food’, people cut pigs’ throat, while pigs hanging upside down for a few minutes. These various scenes enable people to broaden their thoughts. They can learn animals are closely connected to them in many ways, and wherever animals have close relationship with people, the abuse accompanies. Each chapter has their own ways of showing brutal mistreat. While chapter one through three focuses mainly on the terrible images and ways of abuse, the fourth chapter Entertainment, chiefly consist of training scene with curse and punishment. Furthermore, there are attempts to change people’s thought at the beginning and the end of the movie, including beautiful scenes of peaceful nature. It’s quite effective ways of letting people think they are coexisting with millions of other creatures, and human beings have harmed those beautiful natures. Systematical flow of the movie, consist of introduction, 5 chapters of body, and the conclusion, helps people think deeply about themselves and animals.

The last part of each chapter has their own ways of closing and change topics to the next. These mostly include the messages that film director trying to send. The most meaningful end is from chapter three to four. It shows the shocking video of seal hunt, and then one person asks the price of the fur coat, answered by the other saying “This is … $49,500.” This high price implies demand is relatively higher than supply. It shows that supply always comes when demand exists. In other words, people try to get fur of animals somehow because it brings them ample amount of income. The fur coat is definitely luxury not a necessity. People wear it for showing their wealth, not for protecting themselves. Reducing the demand would be one of the most effective ways of protecting animals.

At the beginning of the film, there is comparison of Nazis: in their behavior toward creatures, all men were Nazis. This comparison is very fresh. Most methods introduced in this film were once used toward people. Whipping, cannibalism, boiling to death, cutting neck, and peeling the skin off were used in both orient and western country. Torturing people was commonly conducted without many doubts before recent days. These became prohibited as people devise the concept of dignity, respecting each and every person and inner world of him or her. In people’s inner world, the centers are always themselves. They perceive the outer world by the relationship with themselves, and the relationship formed the inner world. These facts became accepted and the concept of human dignity was formed. The comparison to Nazis tries to broaden the scope to the all animals, which have their own independent inner worlds. The inner worlds of animals start to be recognized as well, yet they are not as complete as human beings. By this comparison, the necessity of accepting animal dignity is suggested. All human beings would be the same as Nazis if they ignore the dignity of animals.

Although the three very good points of movie and large amount of data play a significant role in changing people’s thought, the effect of this movie is still limited. People feel disgusting, so they try not to remind this. The film maker even admits this in the director’s feature. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpFbT9XIVoQ ) If the feeling of disgusting overwhelms the thought of change, the film fails. People try not to remind what they saw, not thinking deeply about what the real problem is. Furthermore, the movie makes people have critical mind on cruelty. However, Cruelty is not a real and basic problem. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=msf1bQrSnvQ ) Nature often accompanies cruelty, when tigers eat zebras, and people get fur from sheep as usual. The basis of all problems is not acknowledging the inner world of animals. People should depend on animal resources in living, but they should respect their world at the same time. Minimizing pain as well as providing appropriate living condition is necessary. Also, people should judge which is more important, luxurious fur coat or the lives of animals. Animals used for luxury and entertainment should be reconsidered.

Many people know the mistreating toward animals before watching Earthlings. Although they’ve already heard from somewhere about the terribleness of hamburger-making-process, people would clearly realize how widely and cruel animals are used. People might not want to remind anymore, but many of them would keep the problem in mind. If they have chance, they would express their thoughts at once, and it would be starting point of ‘revolution’. Although Earthlings does not teach what the real problem is, it would lead people to pay attention on animal rights. Just making people bear the problem in mind is meaningful enough for one film.
